Hazel North Stephens
Lead Commissioner Community Safeguarding and Support Commissioning,
London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
Hazel North Stephens has worked in local government for 12 years and joined Barking and Dagenham Council in 2017. Motivated by social justice and equality issues, she is the Lead Commissioner for Community Safeguarding and is known for her work designing services and approaches to tackle domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Hazel takes a systems response to her work, exploring institutional and social levers to assist in keeping people safe and embeds this into her commissioning practice. This has led to her being shortlisted for the LGC Rising Star Award 2020.
She is thrilled to be supporting Active London and excited about the opportunities to keep citizens safe through sport and physical activity, both in terms of awareness and prevention, and in terms of ongoing recovery.
